In the commercial UAV industry, there will be millions of jobs created from thousands of companies all over the world. Revenues will be in the hundreds of billions of dollars. Whether you are a novice or expert, you will learn much about the commercial UAV industry by just reading though this very comprehensive dictionary. There are also 300 commercial applications explained and a summary is available in the Appendix.
*Airborne Pathogen Detection: UAVs can sample the air in precise patterns, often in coordination with other UAVs working simultaneously at different altitudes. Researchers have already cataloged 500 colonies of Fusarium including 11 species not previously known to be transported far above the Earth's surface. The research will expand to other types of pathogens, marking the beginning of a field one scientist calls aerogenomics.
*Feral Hog Fighting: Wild hogs have become a huge problem in places like Louisiana, rooting up fields in their quest for food and generally being extraordinary 200 pound pests. Given their size, smarts, and tenacity, feral hogs can be hard to kill and that's when you can even find them amid all the vegetation. So how do you deal with the problem? You can use a thermal sensor on a UAV to find them at night. Then you shoot it with a night vision-equipped rifle.
*Pollution Monitoring: Optical and IR sensors on a UAV can measure different pollutants. In Nov 2010, Taiwan showcased the first in the nation pollution monitoring UAV. The UAV detected ozone, nitrogen dioxide and non-methane hydrocarbon all of which are harmful.
*River Discharge: A tip from an anonymous UAV pilot led Texas authorities to open a major criminal investigation into the waste practices of a Dallas meat packing plant. The Environmental Protection Agency, The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ), and Texas Parks and Wildlife investigated whether a Dallas meat packing plant was sending its wastewater to a local river after images from UAV pilot showed a river behind the plant “full of blood.” The Columbia Meat packing plant sits along a creek that runs into the Trinity River.
